Egg carton made of grass

Publication date: May 16, 2016
Organisation: Huhtamaki

Huhtamaki has developed a packaging for eggs consisting of 50% grass and 50% recycled fibers, in collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer and NewFoss.

The grass fibers undergo an innovative treatment which makes them suitable for the production of egg cartons. The grass, provided by Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch public body in forestry), is not suitable for animal feed. With this package, an application has been created for the mowed grass. NewFoss (producer of biobased raw materials) processes the grass before packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki in Franeker produces the egg boxes. With the use of grass fibers and recycled paper fibers, 50% less water is used in the production process and the released greenhouse gases are reduced by 10% compared to regular egg boxes.
