Publication date: January 26, 2011

To make its private label tea more sustainable, Albert Heijn did away with the layer of film around the packet.

In collaboration with the tea supplier, the Dutch supermarket chain investigated the possibility of making the packaging of its private label tea more sustainable. The challenge? To do away with the layer of film around the packaging. Nine months later, the solution was ready to be admired on the shelves. It proved quite a challenge to make the packets of tea completely sealable and re-sealable. With a nod to European Championship football in 2012, the company calculated the amount of film it conserved in terms of football pitches. It came up with a total of 108.
